AREF’s Endowment Fund
An endowment is referred to in Islamic tradition as a “waqf”. A waqf (plural: awqaf) is a charitable trust where an individual dedicates a portion of their wealth, property, or assets for the benefit of a specific cause or the greater public good. Once established, a waqf is permanent and irrevocable, designed to serve society's welfare. The assets, often in the form of land or property, are donated to support essential social, religious, or educational needs, such as building mosques, schools, hospitals, or assisting those in need.
The central principle of a waqf is that the donated asset remains in perpetuity, with its benefits being used for the purpose specified by the donor. While the founder (waqif) can outline specific conditions, the primary intention is always to support and uplift the community.
AREF encourages its donors to establish an endowment fund, managed by the Edmonton Community Foundation, that will provide scholarships in their name or in the name of a loved one, ensuring their legacy continues for generations. These funds are invested in a Sharia-compliant manner, making the process fully halal.
